Joint glide to help improve neck mobility and decrease pain

Understanding Neck Pain

Neck pain can be a pervasive and disruptive condition that affects individuals of all ages and lifestyles. At Peak Physiotherapy and Wellness, we are committed to helping you understand the diverse causes of neck pain and providing effective physiotherapy solutions to alleviate discomfort and restore optimal neck function.

Common Causes of Neck Pain

  • 1. Muscle Strain: Overuse, poor posture, or sudden movements can lead to muscle strain in the neck, causing pain and stiffness.

  • 2. Poor Posture: Postural neck pain arises from strain or tension in the muscles and structures of the neck due to prolonged poor posture. This has become much more common with the use of computers, tablets and cell phones. It can cause stiffness, soreness, and limited mobility in the neck and shoulders, impacting overall comfort and functionality.

  • 3. Degenerative Disc Disease: Degenerative disc disease (DDD) refers to the breakdown of spinal discs, the soft, cushion-like structures between the vertebrae. As these discs degenerate, they may lose their ability to absorb shock, resulting in pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility in the spine.

  • 4. Herniated Discs: Although uncommon in the neck, discs in the neck can herniate. This can put pressure on nerves causing severe pain, tingling, or numbness in the neck and upper extremities. This can be accompanied by weakness in one or both arms.

  • 5. Nerve Impingement: Nerve impingement occurs when pressure is exerted on a nerve, often due to surrounding structures like bones, muscles, or ligaments. This compression leads to pain, tingling, or numbness along the nerve's pathway. Physiotherapy offers effective treatments to alleviate symptoms and improve nerve function.

  • 6. Whiplash: Whiplash occurs when the neck is suddenly jolted backward and then forward, causing strain on the cervical spine. Thus can be due to a car accident, slip and fall, or hitting in contact sports. This abrupt motion can damage muscles, ligaments, and other structures in the neck, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

  • 7. Stress and Tension: Emotional stress and tension often manifest physically, leading to muscle tightness and discomfort in the neck.

  • 8. Arthritis: Arthritis in the neck, also known as cervical spondylosis or cervical osteoarthritis, is a degenerative condition characterized by the breakdown of the cartilage and bones in the cervical spine. As we age, the discs and joints in the neck undergo wear and tear, leading to symptoms such as neck pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility. Arthritis in the neck can result in the formation of bone spurs, which may compress nerves and cause radiating pain or numbness in the arms and hands. While arthritis in the neck is often a natural part of the aging process, it can be exacerbated by factors such as poor posture, repetitive movements, and prior neck injuries.

  • 9. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) occurs when nerves or blood vessels become compressed between the collarbone, first rib, pectoralis and/or scalene muscles. This leads to pain, tingling, and numbness in the neck, shoulders, and arms. This condition may be caused by poor posture, repetitive movements, or anatomical variations.

  • 10. Trauma and Injuries: Accidents, falls, or sports injuries can result in trauma to the neck, leading to pain and potential long-term consequences.

  • Modalities: Application of therapeutic modalities, such as heat, ice, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), or interferential current (IFC) may be used to alleviate pain and promote healing.

  • Acupuncture/Dry Needling: Traditional Acupuncture may be applied for a short period of time to help improve blood flow, enhance healing, decrease nerve sensitivity and alleviate pain. Dry needling may be implemented to decrease size of muscle knots, reduce
